The Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery and Food authorises the deliberate release and the commercialisation of genetically modified organisms. Together with the Ministry of Environment it is the competent authority for developing co-existence regulations.
The National Food Centre develops methods for identification and quantification of GMOs in food products.
All GMO issues related to food safety are handled by the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs. It is supported by the Spanish Food Safety Agency and the National Food Centre.
The National Commission on Bio-Surveillance (CNB) has been installed by the Royal Decree 1697/2003 and belongs to MAPA. It reports about the development and the application of the monitoring plans for the introduction of GMO varieties as well as on co-existence matters in cultivation.
The Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESA) reports to the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs. Its task is the surveillance of the food chain, ensuring the safety of GM foods.
The National Food Centre is part of the AESA. It develops and applies methods for the identification and quantification of GMOs in food products.
