GMO Planting

Genetically modified plants in the Netherlands

Several genetically modified crops have undergone field trials in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, commercial cultivation of GMOs in the Netherlands has not yet begun.

Commercial cultivation

All genetically modified crops that have been authorised for cultivation by the EU may be commercially grown in the Netherlands. Until now, however, no GM plants have been cultivated commercially.

Field trials

Scientists have conducted field trials with many different genetically modified crop and vegetable species in the Netherlands.

For 2008, seven field trials with genetically modified crops are registered – five for potatoes with modified starch content, another for fungus-resistant apples, and two for NK603 maize.
