L’Institut National pour la Recherche Agronomique (The French National Institute of Agronomic Research, INRA) started research on co-existence in 1989, focusing on out-crossing of rapeseed. Since then, INRA has worked on GMO detection and cultivation models. Today, INRA conducts the several projects related to co-existence or GMO detection.
Research concerning the detection of GM traces in the blood of cow fed with GM organism.

The project GeneSys-colza investigates cross-pollination of rapeseed. This research spurred a new research project on sugar beet.
Mapod-maïs focuses on cross-pollination in maize. The project involves producers.
Since 2002, AGPM, the French maize growers association, conducts the research programme POECB, in which scientific data is collected during the cultivation of GM maize. This information is evaluated by a co-operation of several French research institutes in order to facilitate co-existence.
