Piedmont has implemented the legal basis for a co-existence plan.
Piedmont has implemented the legal basis for a co-existence plan.
With the aim of exploiting the genetic resources and specificity of food and agricultural productions of the territory, the new law provides for a regional plan to safeguard cultivations; moreover, it ensures a high level of protection of the health and the safeguards of cultures. The region will respect the precautionary principle, with the aim of avoiding genetic contamination.

The regional plan will have to detail individual technical rules for each crop, including good agricultural practice, the conditions and the formal procedure to protect the agricultural productions of the region as well as to ensure compliance with the rules of co-existence.

While this plan is being implemented, a temporary rule that forbids the cultivation of GMO in the Region Piedmont was introduced until the approval of the Plan (not before 31 December 2008).
