[RO] Syngenta Starts Field Trials with GM Maize in Romania

The Romanian Ministry for the Environment has authorised field trials with GM maize plants. Syngenta Agro SLR will be the first company to grow GM maize in Romania.

Authorisation for field trials of a genetically modified maize event already was granted in May 2006, and remains valid until 2009.

However, the commercial cultivation of GM soybean is the subject of a new ban by the Romanian government. This ban comes into effect in 2007: GM soybeans are not approved for cultivation in the EU, and Romania joined the union on January 1st.
