Traceability measures

Traceability and labelling

Both traceability and labelling are directly covered by the EU Regulations 1829/2003 and 1830/2003, respectively.

Enforcement of compliance

In Slovenia, the competent authorities for both regulations are, for food, the Ministry of Health and, for feed, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food. Supervision of inspections on the application of both regulations is performed by the Health Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia and by the Inspectorate of Republic Slovenia for Agriculture Forestry and Food, each in line with their respective competence. Anyone failing to label GMO products or to document their trade is in violation of the traceability regulations, and may be fined up to 34,000 Euro.

There are four detection laboratories in Slovenia. National Institute of Biology, Department of Biotechnology and Systemic Biology is nominated by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food for National Reference Laboratory for detection of GMOs in food and feed. It is accredited for both qualitative and quantitative testing of GMOs.

Results from the surveillance

Inspection surveillance is carried out in line with both regulations, as well as in line with additional national legislation on inspection supervision, food and feed, monitoring, quality and labeling. Results of surveillance are publicly available. In 2005, approximately 250 samples were taken for GMo analysis. Of more than 200 samples of food, only three contained more than 0,9 percent of GMOs, while of 14 samples of feed, 5 contained more than 0,9 percent of GMOs. In all cases the GMO was soy.

In 2006 there were 54 samples of feed taken for GMO analysis under inspection surveillance and monitoring. In 4 cases there was a violation of traceability regulation. In 2007 there were 94 samples of feed taken for GMO analysis under inspection surveillance and monitoring. In 9 cases there was a violation of traceability regulation.
