Gene targeting:

Method for permitting site-specific genomic modifications

Gene targeting can be useful for precisely switching defined genes on or off.

Gene targeting has long been used in bacteria, yeast, and mice. Scientists have attempted targeted techniques with plants, but so far no efficent methods have been developed. Currently, frequencies of successful targeted modifications in plants are several powers of ten lower than success rates in other organisms.
