Kanamycin resistance:

Resistance to the antibiotic kanamycin

The nptII-gene encodes an enzyme that blocks the effects of the antibiotics kanamycin and neomycin.

The nptII-gene is often used as a marker gene in transgenic plants and microorganisms. The gene is widespread in soil microorganisms.

Kanamycin and neomycin have limited importance in human and animal medicine.
