Modification:

A change in the appearance of a plant species caused by environmental influences

Plants of the same species and with the same genetic constitution (genotype) can look very different (phenotype) if they grow at different sites (e.g. sunny or shady). Their leaves, for example, will develop according to local light and moisture conditions. The range of modifications makes up the range of natural variability of a species.
